The Weekend that changed everything…

I’m not going to try and pretend to be impartial here; there are two facts you need to know… WEEKEND is an incredible film; and yes I work for Peccadillo Pictures who are releasing it in the UK. Now – that aside, let me make my argument for why you have to see this film. Weekend is the second feature from UK director Andrew Haigh. When he premiered it in SXSW earlier this year, the American audience went wild for it. It’s since opened (about a month back) to very healthy box office returns which are probably approaching half a million dollars by now.

So what’s the fuss all about? Well i’m sure most people have seen ‘queer cinema’, outside the obvious stand outs, for exmaple the films of Gregg Araki, Gus Van Sant, Xavier Dolan, Christophe Honoré, Pedro Almodavar etc; the genre usually consists of poor replications of straight rom-coms that we’ve all seen so many times. How often is gay life truly represented on the big screen and in a way that makes it accessible to those outside the LGBT audience?

That’s what Haigh manages to do. In Weekend we witness the blossoming of a real relationship, a connection we’ve all had, gay, straight, bi, trans whatever – we are dealing with emotion in it’s simplest form here, and that doesn’t have a sexuality. But… what makes Weekend really special is that there are no apologies for being gay. No cutaway from the sex scene to show a flower on the windowsill, no pretending that gay life is easy and all smiles – this is true gay cinema, that happens to break out of the LGBT circuit.

So that’s why you should see this film, and it’s films like this that made me want to work for Peccadillo – and make me proud to work there.
